Robert A. “Bob” Gratton, 70, of Peoria, passed away at 5:37 p.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2010, at the Greater Peoria Specialty Hospital.
He was born in Peoria on March 4, 1940, a son of John R. and Stella A. (Cohee) Gratton. They preceded him in death.
Bob is survived by his sister, Marcia A. (Roger) Washburn of Peoria; brother, Gerald L. (Sue) Gratton of New Haven, IN; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was a disabled U.S. Air Force Vietnam Veteran, having honorably served with the Newfoundland Strategic Air Command as a Jet Engine Mechanic.
Bob never let his disability control his life, instead choosing to enjoy what he could. His love for airplanes dominated his life as a child and into adulthood, leading him to serve his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force.
He loved spending his time at Borders, Barnes & Noble, Hobby Lobby and Indian Junction. He also enjoyed listening to music, especially Light Rock and Jazz; flying; riding motorcycles; nature and wildlife; reading about Native Indian history, war history and WWII and Korean War planes; and watching wrestling and martial arts. He collected model airplanes, Indian relics and model cars.
His family is proud of him for the time he spent serving his country and for the strength he showed through all of his adversities. Bob will be remembered for being reserved, gentle of heart and for his free spirit.
Graveside services and interment will be at 2 p.m. on Monday, September 20, 2010, at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria, with Pastor Don Whitman officiating. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Air Force.
Memorial contributions may be made in Bob's memory to the Disabled American Veterans.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Clary Funeral Home, 428 West McClure Avenue, in Peoria.
